In the 9-1-1 Season 3 fall finale, Michael learned some devastating news. The first person he told was Bobby, and it was the best decision ever.

There is absolutely no doubt that we’re devastated about that 9-1-1 Season 3 fall finale reveal for Michael. However, I’m certainly glad he was able to tell someone. That someone was Bobby, and it certainly put a smile on my face.

Out of all the people in his life, he turned to his ex-wife’s husband. Yep, if you didn’t know the set-up of 9-1-1 or the circumstances surrounding Michael and Athena’s divorce, that statement would sound odd. However, 9-1-1 has brought this perfect family blend, with the chance for everyone to find happiness without animosity between Michael and Athena.

And that’s something telling Bobby first represents. Michael is confident in Bobby’s love for Athena. He’s happy that Athena was able to find someone else to love after him, and the shock to the system that admitting he was gay would have been for her. He knows that when he’s gone, Athena and his children still have a father figure to look out for them.

Bobby will never replace Michael. That’s something at one point Michael did worry about, but it was soon clear that it was an initial fear of losing out, linked to the breakdown of his own relationship. However, Michael knows that Bobby cares about the family. They’re two men who love the same woman and the same kids.

When Athena and the kids learn the truth about Michael’s illness, they’re going to need someone who is a support for them. They’ll need someone who isn’t learning the truth for the first time. The best person that was ever going to be was Bobby, and Michael recognized that.

Plus, telling Bobby first shows that Michael trusts him. Michael knows that Bobby won’t tell Athena without his say so. He knows that Bobby isn’t going to judge, but offer support when necessary—and that support will be for absolutely everyone. You just have to look at the photo at the end with Bobby putting his hand on Michael’s shoulder that Bobby is offering everything Michael knew he would.

After going through the fears of radiation poisoning, Bobby also showed his level-headedness. Bobby could have panicked, looking at every small nosebleed or pain as a sign that he was suffering from radiation poisoning. Instead, he was the one to keep everyone else calm and focused. He kept his mind on the positives, refusing to worry about what could be and just listen to the numbers.

Yes, he was relieved to hear that he had the all-clear, but he chose not to panic. He was the rock for everyone else in his own medical scare. He’ll be the rock for everyone else in Michael’s.
