Thursday TV ratings: TGIT good, Deputy continues to fall
TGIT kicked off its new schedule well on Jan. 23, but the same couldn’t be said for Deputy. Here’s a look at the TV ratings for the night.
TGIT kicked off its new schedule on Jan. 23, starting with Station 19‘s Season 3 premiere. It was a good night for the three shows, but the same couldn’t be said for all networks. Here’s a look at the Thursday TV ratings for the night.
We’re not looking at shows that are either ending or have already been renewed. That means The CW’s lineup is missing and we’re not looking too much at The Good Place and Will & Grace. However, I will say that the penultimate night (remember it’s a two-hour finale on Jan. 30) for The Good Place was great.

Let’s look at the shows that are most concerning. We’ll start with FOX’s Deputy, which saw another fall in the metrics. This time, it was down 19% in the demo and 13% in the total audience. While not as bad as Almost Family, it’s still in danger of being canceled. The problem is Thursday nights are tough and Deputy doesn’t offer too much that’s new to the TV crime drama genre.
However, FOX did have a better start to the night, with Last Man Standing and Outmatched. While Last Man Standing was down a little, the demo was the second-best of the timeslot. That followed with new series Outmatched. It’s a good start, but we’ll see how the new series stabilizes.
For NBC, it was a good night for Superstore and Perfect Harmony. Both shows saw upward ticks. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about with Superstore. It’s Perfect Harmony that is in the firing line. While up 7% in the demo and 5% in the total audience, the shows are still the poorest performers of the night behind The CW and reruns. In fact, even some reruns performed better!
It was all about ABC, though, which debuted its new TGIT lineup. Grey’s Anatomy, after taking on the 8 p.m. slot for years, has moved back to its original middle timeslot, allowing Station 19 to kick-off the night.
The Season 3 premiere was the first hour of a two-hour crossover, and it was an excellent choice. Compared to the Season 2 premiere, the ratings are up 11% in the demo and 35% in the total audience, making it the top performer in the audience of the night. It will be interesting to see how that holds in the future. It’s clear that a lot of Grey’s Anatomy fans were tuning in, as the metrics for the second hour were relatively steady compared to the midseason finale and it was the top demo of the night.
As for A Million Little Things, the midseason premiere saw a 6% rise in the demo, making it the top performer of the timeslot. While the total audience was down 8%, it was still the top performer of the timeslot in this metric, but it was up against a CBS special and a rerun of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. CBS’ Tommy starts in a couple of weeks and new episodes of Law & Order: SVU will return soon, so it will be interesting to see how all three perform.
