Fans of the Twilight series are missing their favorite vampires, but A Discovery of Witches could fill the void.

Stephenie Meyer wrote the Twilight series for a mostly young adult audience. That didn’t stop adults from falling in love with Edward and Bella’s tortured love story. It’s been seven and a half years since the last movie released, and fans are still talking about the series. They want more. That’s unlikely to happen, but A Discovery of Witches is a delicious substitute, especially for those who want more romance and a little more of everything.

A Discovery of Witches is based upon a series of books (just as Twilight was) written by Deborah Harkness. The show debuted in 2018 with eight episodes (easily bingeable in one weekend), and it was quickly renewed for seasons 2 and 3. A supernatural cornucopia of witches, vampires, and demons, the series has amassed millions of fans that are anxiously awaiting for the release date of Season 2. Here’s why it’s so popular and why Twilight fans should take a look.

The forbidden romance is between a witch and a vampire

Just as Edward and Bella’s romance was forbidden so is that of Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop. In fact, there’s even a law against their romance that could end in death for both of them. That doesn’t make it any less romantic, and the chemistry between the two leads (Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer) is electric.

More from Entertainment

When Bella was a human, she was a target for every vampire, and Edward and his family were always looking out for her. There were many times when Bella was in mortal danger, and this kept fans on the edge of their seats. In A Discovery of Witches, Dr. Diana Bishop is a powerful witch who is just learning about her powers, but the more she learns, the better she gets at using them. Not only does she protect herself, but she saves the life of the man she loves.

It’s a supernatural love story for adults

There is no mistaking that this is a show for adults as it contains language and sexual situations. The heat between Matthew and Diana stays at a slow simmer even when they’re not physically touching. And the love scenes would have put Twilight into the rated R category.

With a dedicated fan base, it could continue past three seasons

It’s difficult saying goodbye to a favorite series. The Twilight movies gave us approximately 10 or so hours of entertainment (with five movies) not counting the books. As A Discovery of Witches has already been renewed, we may have another 16 episodes on top of the original eight. And provided the ratings stay high enough, the series could continue beyond Season 3, feeding the Twilight fix for a few more years.

There is much more danger and intrigue

In A Discovery of Witches, there is always something going on behind the scenes. The vampires, demons, and witches aren’t the best of friends, and one is always trying to take control of the supernatural kingdom. While that takes some of the focus off of Matthew and Diana, ultimately, she is the key to finding the origins of the supernatural world. And the writers do a very good job of providing intriguing clues. So even if you haven’t read the books, you won’t be lost, but you will be fascinated.

The supporting characters bring depth to the story

With Diana’s aunts, Matthew’s mother, brother, and son (sired by Matthew) and an entire council of vampires, demons, and witches, the show isn’t short on characters that add to the overall storyline. Matthew’s best friend is a demon who shouldn’t associate with a vampire. Diana’s aunts are witches who have a hard time accepting Matthew as the man Diana loves. And even the witches turn against Diana when she chooses Matthew over them and their fight for ultimate power.

There’s never a dull moment on A Discovery of Witches, and the first eight episodes were packed with a lot romance, mystery, danger, and even the slightest amount of horror. Action, humor, and betrayal spice up each episode as well, and knowing there is more to come in Season 2 is better than waiting for Christmas.
