A breakdown of the live TV ratings from Thursday, Oct. 8

TV networks are starting to get back to some normalcy. All networks had something new airing on Thursday, Oct. 8, and it’s time to look at the live TV ratings.

FOX dominated the night, but that’s not surprising. It had Thursday Night Football, as it always does, and pulled in 10.07 million viewers and a 2.9 demo rating. There was no way scripted or unscripted programming would beat that, and we didn’t expect it to.

As for the other networks, there were mixed results in the live TV ratings. Everything had at least one new episode to air, with some networks debuting new seasons or new shows.

Supernatural saw the biggest uptick in the demo of the night

Supernatural returned, bringing the start of the end. There were just seven episodes left when the night began, and we got a sweet and meaningful monster-of-the-week episode. With the boost in promotion and the hype around live watch parties with the stars, it’s no wonder the live ratings were up from the previous new episode.

More from Ratings

The total audience was up 7% and the demo was up 53%. It’s the highest demo of the season, and highest demo on The CW all premiere week.

Would that continue into The Outpost Season 3’s premiere? Sadly not. The ratings were down from the Season 2 premiere, with the audience down by 17%. However, that total audience was up from the Season 2 finale. The CW has already ordered another 13 episodes to the season, so there is hope for this series, which is usually a summer show.

ABC, CBS, and NBC in the live TV ratings

Other networks didn’t perform as well as The CW in the live ratings. Everything else had at least one of the metrics down, if not both of them.

Celebrity Family Feud had an okay night, with a steady audience. It lost 12% of its demo, though. Big Brother pulled in the best demo of the whole night outside of the football, although that was down 25% from the previous Thursday night episode. The audience was also down by 11%.

Connecting… aired its series debut in the first half-hour slot of the night. It didn’t perform as well as NBC would have liked, pulling in just 1.65 million viewers and a 0.3 demo. The special in the second half-hour slot, Closer Look Thursday went down from that.

Then there’s Star Trek: Discovery. It did see the best upward tick in the total audience across all shows and pulled in 1.81 million viewers. However, the demo was down 33%, lower than The CW. Is this a bad thing? Well, if it was a new show, I’d say so. However, the show is on CBS All Access, where fans can stream in full. There’s nothing to worry about here.
