Fox has become a new hub for animated shows. What originally started with The Simpsons has grown into a plethora of related shows. While none have surpassed the longevity of the Simpson family, other shows are certainly trying. With the likes of Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers on the roster, Fox has no shortage of animated series to pick from including Bless The Harts.

Bless the Harts originally premiered back in 2019, making it the newcomer in Fox’s Animation Domination lineup. Considering how much Fox has struggled to fill its Sunday slots, Bless The Harts seemed like the perfect solution. The series was sandwiched in between The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers, making it the ultimate middle child of the two series.

The show managed to be equal parts relatable and hilarious for those of us who live or were born in a small town. Created by Emily Spivey, the series featured a lovable cast of characters including the titular Hart family including Betty Hart, Violet Hart, and Jenny Hart. The trio was often joined by Wayne, Jenny’s boyfriend, Brenda, Jenny’s friend or even, Jesus. As odd as the series could be at times, it worked.

As delightful and fun as the series was, things sadly weren’t meant to be. After two charming seasons, Fox decided to pull the plug on the show, sadly ending its run prematurely. Bless The Harts joins the many Fox shows that were ended too soon. If there’s one thing to be said about the show, it’s that Bless the Harts deserved better than how Fox handled things with it.

Bless the Harts deserved more than two seasons on Fox

Starting things off, Bless The Harts was one of the few series at the time that was created by a woman. All of the other animated shows during that timeslot were created by men. While it might seem like something small, it was one thing that made the series stand out. Since then, Fox has added other animated shows created by women. Upon its premiere though, Bless The Harts was the only animated series created by a woman in that programming block.

Other than that, Bless The Harts truly filled a gap left there by King of the Hill. While some cite how close Bob’s Burgers is to King of the Hill, I’d argue that Bless the Harts was even more closely related. Bless the Harts really captured the heart of King of the Hill especially when it came to the family dynamics. Both shows focused on how much love a family can have for each other and how sometimes, family is the most important thing.

Additionally, Bless The Harts had such a stellar cast behind it. With the likes of Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Ike Barinholtz featured, the show had no shortage of talent. The series also had a plethora of talented guest stars too including Kristen Schaal, Christopher Meloni, and Ana Gasteyer. While most of the shows’ characters were obviously connected to creator Emily Spivey in a way, the casting didn’t feel out-of-place.

What really made Bless the Harts so great was how it handled religion and how it wasn’t afraid to push the envelope with that theme. Most notably, the show featured Jesus as his own character and it was nice to see him talk to Jenny about her problems.

The show treated Jesus more like a friend to Jenny and it was refreshing. However, it’s clear that type of characterization wouldn’t work for everyone and some would see it as offensive.

Nevertheless, Bless The Harts felt like it was breath of fresh air. It’s upsetting to see Fox cancel it with only two seasons under its belt. While it would be nice to see the show being picked up elsewhere, it’s doubtful. Either way, Bless The Harts truly deserved much more than Fox gave it and it’s sad to see such a promising show end so abruptly.
