We know the deal by now: ‘This Is Us’ will make us cry. But director Ken Olin says Season 2 will require a little more than tissues.

More from This Is Us

When This Is Us returns for its second season on September 26, we’re getting a monumental upgrade. Sure, Season 2 already sounds like it’s going to surpass its first by some stroke of genius. But our fragile hearts will also need to make the necessary preparations for the heightened feels coming to wring our tear ducts dry.

Ken Olin, executive producer and director extraordinaire, took to Twitter to wax poetic about his “best birthday gift so far.” What was it? The first cut of the This Is Us Season 2 premiere. Where did we go wrong in life that all we get for our birthdays are thoughtful presents that reflect our interests and Target gift cards? Olin shared this tidbit regarding the episode: “IT WILL BLOW YOU AWAY. Our cast is back & ROCKIN’ IT.” No shockers here. We have come to expect nothing less than stellar, tear-jerking performances from the This Is Us cast. And according to Ken Olin, they are turning up the tear-jerker factor to new extremes.

“By the way, forget tissues,” Olin warned. “Think beach towels.” You read that right. Good, old fashioned tissues simply will not do the trick anymore for Season 2 of This Is Us. Go ahead and head to Target (with your birthday gift cards) and stock up on those end-of-summer markdowns. Beach towels are the new Kleenex, and we should have seen this coming.

Small details about the top-secret second season have begun slipping through the cracks. We’ve known for a while that the cause of Jack’s death will possibly be revealed in the premiere episode, and we’ll dig deeper into the depths of the Pearson family. From Beth and Randall’s adoption disagreement to Kevin’s tension with Rebecca, those beach towels will certainly come in handy. Thanks for the heads up, Ken Olin!
