Joining the chorus of fans disappointed by Mandy Moore’s Emmy snub, Milo Ventimiglia waxes poetic about his TV wife.

More from This Is Us

When the nominations for the 69th Annual Primtime Emmy Awards were announced last month, This Is Us was honored with an embarrassment of earned riches. The buzzy newbie walked away with 11 total nominations — one of which was taken away — including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Actor for both Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia. But there was one blatant snub: Mandy Moore.

In a cast overflowing with award-worthy talent, a few subs here and there are to be expected among the crowded races. (This is the era of “Peak TV,” after all.) Still, Mandy Moore’s multi-generational work as Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us deserved the highest recognition of television esteem, and seeing her shut out simply stung. As it turns out, fans weren’t the only ones miffed and peeved and all of the other strong adjectives for “angry” about the blind spot. Moore’s on-screen husband, Milo Ventimiglia, opened up to Entertainment Tonight about his partner-in-scene’s snub.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about his own first-ever Emmy nomination for playing the beloved Pearson patriarch, Ventimiglia expressed his interest in directing an episode of This Is Us and voting for his castmate and Emmys competitor Sterling K. Brown. But he also gave credit where credit is due to Mandy Moore. On her Emmys snub, he tells ET:

"“It upsets me, but it also strangely affirms that the awards don’t mean anything. They do and they don’t. People must be blind, because I see [her performance] all the time. For people not to see it and not see this living, breathing woman brought to life by Mandy, I think, is horrible. But I said to her, ‘Look, I got this one. You got the last one. You get the next one.’”"

What he said. Ventimiglia’s comments echo the long-known phenomenon of the Television Academy ignoring talent (*cough* Emmy Rossum on Shameless *cough*) and/or not making enough room to recognize the best of the best. Although Mandy Moore didn’t score the nod this year, Ventimiglia’s certain her moment will arrive with Season 2: “It’s absolutely going to,” he assures ET.

Mandy Moore felt the love of her co-star’s support and responded with an equally heartwarming and adoring message on Twitter. Imagine the positivity that radiates on the This Is Us set. It’s what the world — and the stacked Emmys competition — needs right now.

Next: Mandy Moore was snubbed at the Emmys, and it's just not fair

We’re with Milo Ventimiglia: Mandy Moore’s performances as Rebecca Pearson in the cutthroat finale and everything in between without question warranted a nomination. But it’s not all about awards, as self-assuring as they might. And as he said, Ventimiglia got this one, Moore grabbed the Golden Globe nod, and she’ll surely land her Emmys love with the upcoming “deeper” second season.
