This Is Us star and Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown speaks honestly with his son about race and sexuality, something we could use more of these days.

More from This Is Us

With each passing day, we continue to love This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown more and more. From opening up about fatherhood to discussing the impact and importance of representing transracial adoption, Brown has stolen our hearts. Well, if you have been keeping up with the man also known as Randall Pearson, then this is nothing new.

During his revealing interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Jess Cagle, Sterling K. Brown spoke about how he addresses formerly taboo subjects such as sexuality with his young son. Growing up in the Midwest, Brown wasn’t accustomed to talking about certain topics out in the open, which is something his children haven’t inherited living in Los Angeles. Thankfully, Brown hasn’t adopted the mindset of sweeping things under the rug, proving he’s got his progressive parenting down to a science. Did we mention we love him more and more with each passing day?

Brown shares with Cagle how he handled his son’s line of questioning upon seeing Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair. Rather than dismissing his son’s curiosity, which many parents are wont to do, he offered his son the honest truth and fielded his follow-up questions about Jenner and her transition. Although he doesn’t have all the answers, he can help his son understand.

Naturally, Brown’s son wanted to learn more about queer identities, and the only way for children to grow up with an unprejudiced attitude is for their parents to pass down tolerance and allyship. Clearly, Sterling K. Brown is doing this part of parenting right, especially when he sheds light on a subject that hits close to home:

"“I do feel like, in terms of being African-American and the way little black boys are scrutinized, I feel as if you don’t get away with boys being boys the same way that you do when you’re part of mainstream society.”"

On the subject of race representation, Brown also touched on his upcoming role in Marvel’s Black Panther, which centers around an African-American superhero and features a predominantly black cast. As a fan of the comics, Brown was honored to have a role in the film, and more than anything, he’s excited to share the experience with his son: “He gets to see an image of himself as the man.
