Supernatural Season 2, Episode 22 recap: Dean deals with the loss of Sam
After the shocking twist in the penultimate episode of Supernatural Season 2, fans waited impatiently to find out what Dean would do next. How many guessed where he would turn?
Supernatural Season 2 had foreshadowed the moments of the finale in the premiere. It then did it again with “Crossroad Blues.” We all knew the steps that Dean would take to make sure his brother would live. It was clear from the relationship they had and the burden Dean felt that he would sacrifice his own life for that of his brother’s. But did you see exactly how it would go down?
One thing Supernatural Season 2, Episode 22 gave us was the chance to see Jensen Ackles’ acting abilities. As Sam laid dead on a cot, Dean apologized profusely. We all felt the emotion watching it and still do when reruns are on. Here’s your chance to feel it all again in this recap.
“What am I supposed to do?”

The episode kicks off in one of the houses in the abandoned city. Dean isn’t ready to accept his brother is dead and doesn’t want any part in whatever the coming war is. The grief and anger is so raw that he screams at Bobby to leave.
Now Dean is left wondering what to do next. This is where Ackles’ knocks it out the park, as he apologizes for not looking out for his brother properly; for not protecting him. As the emotions get too much, he screams at whoever may be listening, asking what he’s supposed to do next.
That’s when he figures it out: He can sell his soul.

“I’ll give you one year”
Things don’t quite go to plan at the crossroads. The demon is only willing to give one year instead of the usual 10. There’s another catch: If Dean tries to find any way to get out of this deal, Sam will drop dead right away. Desperate to get Sam back, Dean agrees and heads straight back to Sammy.
Sam wakes up where he lays. While there’s pain, the stab wound in his back is mostly healed. He remembers something happening, but not everything and doesn’t realize that he’s been brought back to life. Dean decides to lie and just tell Sam that he was wounded.
After running through everything that happened (except the end) in the last episode, the Winchesters head over to Bobby’s place. Of course, Bobby knows exactly what Dean has done but decides to play along with Dean’s story.
“A storms coming…”
Despite being kicked out by a grieving Dean, Bobby didn’t stop researching for ways to stop whatever was coming. He’s spotted demon omens all over the place but there is one place that has none: Southern Wyoming.
Before Bobby can explain too much, Ellen appears at Bobby’s looking for help. Of course, Bobby instantly gets her to drink holy water to prove she’s not a demon. Once that’s over, she explains that she was getting pretzels when the bomb went off at the Roadhouse, which is why she is still alive. Ash had already called her to tell her there was something in a safe: a map of Wyoming.
Ash had left clues for the Winchesters. The map has five Xs, marking abandoned frontier churches. They were all built by Samuel Colt–the same Samuel Colt who made the infamous Colt. Iron railway lines connected all the churches, forming a pentagram. It was a devil’s trap and clearly something to keep demons out instead of in.
Before they all head out to Wyoming, Bobby chews into Dean for making the deal. However, we all know that deep down he wasn’t completely sad. He’d spend time finding a way to break the deal.
“This is the only gun in the whole universe that can shoot me dead”
Meanwhile, the Yellow-Eyed Demon is showing Jake the ropes and explaining the whole plan. He is the strongest of the special children, after all, and can now lead the demon army. There’s just one thing: Jack needs to open the gates of Hell and break the pentagram. Of course, Jake doesn’t initially want to do it, but he’s been put in an awkward position and the thought of wealth for him and his family encourages him to work with the demon.
The Winchesters, Bobby, and Ellen get to Wyoming just as Jake is about to unlock the crypt. Jake uses his growing psychic powers to keep the group at bay. Once the crypt is open, Sam is able to kill Jake. Dean grabs the Colt from the door and everyone ducks for cover as demons are released onto the Earth.
As Bobby, Ellen, and Sam try to force the doors shut, Dean gets the chance to go after the Yellow-Eyed Demon. For a few seconds, it looks like Dean isn’t going to get to make the kill, but the ghost of John Winchester appears and gives Dean the breathing space to make the shot. Ellen and Bobby managed to close the gates to Hell.
There’s an emotional moment between John and the Winchester brothers before he disappears (presumably moving on). However, the confrontation with the Yellow-Eyed Demon makes it clear to Sam that he did die. Dean made a deal and it ends with Sam vowing that he’ll find a way to save his brother.
