Supernatural Season 2 is full of fun episodes. Some are important for the overall story and others are just good as standalone fillers. Here are seven you can enjoy over and over again.

Supernatural Season 2 had a good mixture of standalone filler episodes and important ones for the overall storyline. Even those that focused on the Special Children storyline have their place as standalones. They helped to add more depth to the characters, but keep much of the monster-of-the-week approach that the earlier years benefitted from.

When you come to just put any episode of Supernatural on, make sure it’s one that you’ll enjoy. Here are seven Supernatural Season 2 episodes that are perfect, whether you want to laugh, cry, or be scared!

Note: This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re my top 7 episodes of the whole season. They’re just ones that are good to watch on their own.

Episode 17: Heart

If you want an episode that will leave you sobbing, Episode 17 titled “Heart” is the one that you want to watch. This episode sees the Winchesters head to San Francisco (and it’s not often they end up in big cities) and face a werewolf. While they’d faced werewolves in their past, this is the first time we’d seen the creatures show up.

This episode comes after a few important ones for Dean’s character development, as he realizes that not all creatures are evil. Rather than instantly want to kill Madison, he works with Sam to find a cure. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work and Sammy has to make the heartbreaking decision to kill the first woman he’d slept with since Jessica’s death.

Episode 20: What Is and What Should Never Be

This will always remain one of my favorite Supernatural episodes of all time. It’s the first episode I ever watched. We get to go inside Dean’s mind in a way, as a Djinn attacks and brings up a wish that Dean has never said out loud: that his mom never died.

There are some sad elements to this life, such as John not being alive anymore and the Winchester brothers not talking. However, we also got to see Dean willing to sacrifice his own happiness to make sure Sam is happy. In the end, he sacrifices the world for the sake of innocent people.

Episode 8: Crossroad Blues

More from Supernatural

While this does have an importance in the bigger Supernatural Season 2 storyline, it’s also an excellent standalone episode. This is when we get the first introduction of the crossroad demons and the types of deals they make.

The Winchesters have to save a man who made a deal to save his wife’s life. They also learn that John made a deal to save Dean. While this was something we had an idea about, hearing about it all left us with more dread. That meant John was somewhere in Hell.

Episode 7: The Usual Suspects

When you want to see more of Sam in action, “The Usual Suspects” is the episode that you want to watch. Dean has been accused of murder and it’s up to Sammy to figure out who this “Dana Schulps” is and what she has to do with Dean’s case. Of course, it turns out that Dana Schulps isn’t even a name and that makes things even trickier.

We don’t just get to see Sam figure a lot of the case out (partially with Dean’s help), but we get to see the compassion he has for spirits and people. He didn’t have much time to explain things to Diana, but was caring when she turned to him for help after seeing the death omen.

Episode 12: Nightshifter

This standalone episode brought shape shifters back into the mix. At the same time, we got the introduction of Agent Hendrickson. “Nightshifter” also gave us an innocent man who was a conspiracy theorist and was sure there was something that the government wasn’t telling him. While Dean wanted to throw the guy a bone, Sammy was clear that this sort of thing would get him killed.

Unfortunately, Sam was right. But if only it was just this that became a problem. The Winchester brothers became wanted men again and they’d soon learn they had the FBI now on their case.

Episodes 21 & 22: All Hell Breaks Loose

The final two are in one. “All Hell Breaks Loose” was the two-part season finale that gave us a death we didn’t expect at this point in the series. Sam was killed off and we were left for a week wondering how Dean was going to fix this. Deep down, we knew it would involve a crossroad deal, but did we really think he’d only take a year?

What we also got was the big battle—the big master plan from Azazel. That also led to his death, something we’d wanted from the start of the whole series.
