When Supernatural took to the stage at SDCC 2018, we got a few hints at the things to come. There was nothing quite as rocking as Kansas, but here are the five biggest takeaways from the panel.

Supernatural was always going to have a lot to live up to after last year’s panel. Knowing they couldn’t deliver the same magnificent performance of Kansas at SDCC 2018, panel moderators Richard Speight Jr. and Rob Benedict decided to treat us to their own singing and joke about the lack of rock band. It broke the ice going into the panel that would reveal some major events and discussions about Season 14.

While I shared a roundup/recap of everything that happened, it included quick discussions and fun mentions throughout the panel. This is a chance to breakdown all the information and pull out the biggest takeaways from SDCC 2018. By the way, we’re still waiting for the Season 14 sneak peek to get released!

So, without further adieu, here are the five biggest takeaways from the Supernatural SDCC 2018 panel. There are a few minor spoilers.

5. Jack and his powers revealed

Alexander Calvert impressed at his first SDCC appearance, taking the jibs from Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki and throwing things back at them. He’s a star.

However, the biggest takeaway is about Jack and his powers. It’s not going to be easy, as Jack as definitely lost his powers. Alexander never went into the full details and whether this was permanent or would only last a few episodes, but his powers are gone at the start of the season.

This is an important plot point. The most powerful being in Season 13 is now a powerless human. It’s not going to be easy for him to accept that, especially when he still blames himself for hurting people with his powers and will blame himself partially for things that have happened to Dean. This may explain a little more about the Episode 3 spoilers we got.

4. Sam will be a leader

It’s about time this happened! Sam is stepping up to take over some of the gap that Dean has left. We’ve been promised this time and time again, so I hope we actually get to see Sam really step up fully this time. We got some promises way back in the third season and then again in Season 12.

Sam doesn’t have his brother to fall back on this time. He has a group of hunters from another world who will look to him for some sort of guidance. Apocalypse Bobby will be able to help a little and there is Mary to step in now and then, but this is Sam’s world and Dean is Sam’s brother. It’s going to be up to him.

3. There will be more bonding between Sam/Jack and Cas/Jack

More from Supernatural

Finally, we’ll get to see the bonding that we waited all of Season 13 to see. During the panel, we got confirmation that Jack’s character development and relationship with a couple of people will grow. Those people are Sam and Castiel.

It makes sense. Supernatural Season 14 is going to see Jack struggle without his powers and the knowledge that he put Lucifer before everyone else; that he trusted Lucifer. Yet Sam refused to kill him because he’s family. And Castiel has the view that Jack is family. They all do! There are going to be some important moments for all three characters.

2. Michael has a plan

In case you doubted it, Michael will put a plan in place to “purify” the Earth. He doesn’t have the number of angels at his disposal as he did in the Apocalypse World. Hopefully, he’ll find out that Heaven is on the brink of collapse, so he’s got to do this alone.

During the sneak peek, fans did learn that Michael talks a lot about humanity and has an almost external inner monologue as he talks to the person who is calling out for help. He assesses this new world and has to figure out the next steps to take. This is a world that hasn’t been damaged through the apocalypse and it requires a different plan.

1. The wayward women and Rowena will be back

For those who were worried what the lack of Wayward Sisters meant for Jody and co., this was covered in the SDCC 2018 panel. Jody Mills will return. The panel also confirmed that a couple of other wayward women and Rowena would also make an appearance or two.

In a later press conference, the cast and showrunners confirmed that Claire would be one of the wayward women returning and there would be one more. There wasn’t anything said about whether the Kaia/The Bad Place storyline would be covered, just that a couple of people would turn up.

Having Jody, Rowena, and a couple of others turning up isn’t surprising. Jody wouldn’t just stand by and let Michael use Dean and Rowena has become an important part of the Winchesters’ lives now. We’ll just have to wait and see how often they show up.
