The Gifted: How will Reed Strucker’s mutant abilities come into play?

Stephen Moyer has confirmed that his character, Reed Strucker, will have mutant abilities in season 2 of The Gifted. What will this look like? How will it manifest?  And what could his powers be?

Those who watched the trailer for The Gifted season 2 and predicted that Reed Strucker would have mutant abilities can rest assured that they were right. When we see the blood begin to surge in his arm, it’s clear something is going on, but it’s exciting to officially hear that he will be unlocking those formerly suppressed powers.

Moyer told TV Guide that he discovers his abilities as a result of going back and researching what he “could have been” before his father inoculated him with an antidote that suppressed his X-gene. As far as the nature of his abilities, he simply told TV guide that “it’s in the family.”

At first, this doesn’t seem like much of a clue — “in the family” — but when you think about it for a second, that could really be a huge hint as to what we can expect for Reed. And when you combine that with showrunner Matt Nix’s comments, you start to get an idea as to at least how powerful he will be.

Nix revealed the following in the same TV Guide article regarding the topic:

"“Reed’s had powers suppressed for 30-something years, so when they come along, it’s a rough ride. It’s a very, very rough ride. It’s not like he’s suddenly a superhero. And one of the things we think about a lot is how are these powers hooked into someone’s emotional life, and Reed’s a pretty repressed guy. So powers showing up for Reed is not good news. It’s very, very bad news.”"

So with those elements in play, thus far we know that he is likely to be extremely powerful since his children and his family members are some of the most powerful mutants to ever exist. And we also know that discovering these powers will be an extremely uncomfortable process for him.

The show has gone to great lengths to emphasize that the Strucker family’s mutant abilities are a level up from the norm. The Von Strucker twins were legends who could level buildings together — something Reed’s children have the ability to do as well.

So Reed’s father probably worked so hard to rid his son of mutant powers because he had known that he contained a destructive gift that the world could barely contain. In the trailer, his arm looks like it is surging with power. So a Cyclops-level destructive power could be in play here.

Time will tell all, but if one thing’s for certain, the mutant underground will need all the firepower they can get if they are going to survive in this new, more hostile, anti-mutant world in The Gifted season 2.
