In the newest trailer for The Walking Dead Season 9, various shots show Maggie Greene taking charge in the newly expanded community. However, one resident isn’t taking to Maggie’s leadership and will physically lash out at her.

There’s a lot to digest in the latest promo clip for The Walking Dead Season 9 but one of the most intriguing shots is hidden in a very brief glance. The sequence in question depicts Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) in some sort of tussle. They’re struggling and Gregory appears to have a knife in hand. Could this be an attempt on Maggie’s life?

Regardless of the context, this attack has been a long time coming. Gregory weaseled his way back into the Hilltop and seemed to be scheming from behind the scenes. He considered himself the Hilltop’s leader despite abandoning them at crucial moments in the war with Saviors. Gregory even went as far as to shun anyone who rebelled against him—Maggie most of all.

Furthermore, Gregory’s actions thus far tell us he harbors some sort of resentment for Maggie and it’s finally led to him exacting a plan to eliminate her. Gregory toyed with the idea in Season 8, standing behind Maggie with a knife in hand, but didn’t act. Now, however, it looks like Gregory has changed his mind. Check out the clip below:

Speculation aside, Gregory making an attempt on Maggie’s life isn’t all that surprising. In fact, it’s happened before—in The Walking Dead comics. The big difference is how dark the plot turned.

When Gregory’s comic counterpart attempts to kill Maggie, he doesn’t just surprise her with a knife. Gregory lures a still-pregnant Maggie back to his trailer where he poisons her drink. Maggie falls to the floor shortly after and Gregory stands over her menacingly.

He hangs over Maggie, sizing her up as if he’s not done with her. But on cue, Jesus walks in the door. A small scuffle later, Gregory is subdued and Maggie is taken to the infirmary.

Eventually, Maggie recovers from the poison and deals with Gregory. She doesn’t exact the type of vengeance one would expect but hanging Gregory from a tree settles the score. That said, Maggie’s television counterpart might not be so merciful.

The teases of Maggie in The Walking Dead Season 9 have shown her with this ferocity and sense of unpredictability that makes her dangerous. One of the glimpses at her conversation with Rick even teases Maggie waging a coup on the Rickocracy so she’s more than likely going to have a bloodthirsty attitude going into Season 9. Plus, Maggie still wants justice for Glenn—and she wants blood.

Nevertheless, it’s safe to say Maggie is going to execute Gregory after their little fight. Unless, by some far off chance, she’s mortally wounded, Maggie is going to respond to Gregory’s attack in kind. Her method of disposal might not be identical to the comics but perhaps she’ll take a note from The Whisperers’ playbook and pike Gregory. A long-standing reminder posted outside would give intruders a reason to stay away and the Hilltop’s residents a reason not to mess with Maggie Greene.
