Each character on Supernatural comes with their own personality trait and abilities. Sam Winchester has a number of skills that nobody else does on the show. Here are eight things that Sam can do that others wouldn’t dream of managing.

For Day #8 of 25 Days of Sam-mas, we’re looking at the amazing-ness (yes, that is so a word) of Sam Winchester. Each character on Supernatural has their own personality and abilities. There’s a lot that each one can do that others definitely cannot.

That is the case for Sammy. From the very beginning, he’s shown skills that others don’t have. Even Andrew Dabb has said that the Winchesters are the pillars of the series. Without one, there wouldn’t be a show because they compliment each other so well.

What can Sam do that others can’t? Here are eight for Day #8.

8. Empathy for everyone else

More from Supernatural

Let’s just start with empathy. While there are some other characters that show a level of empathy, Sammy is the one that connects with almost everyone. In fact, arguably, I could say that he’s the only one who shows empathy as the rest tend to lean on the side of sympathy instead.

And yes, there is a huge difference. Someone who is empathetic connects on an emotional level and that is most definitely something Sammy does. He understands their feelings in situations.

We just have to look at how he connects to Jack and Kaia, two people who feel like freaks and disconnected to the world. Then there have been times he’s connected to Alex, Apocalypse Charlie, and even Kevin.

Some of these connections are link to the fact that Sam has been through the situations himself. However, he’s also shown the ability to understand and empathize without being through them, unlike others.

7. Overcome an archangel

We’ve now seen Sam, Castiel, and Dean possessed by archangels. There’s only one of them that has shown the inner strength and ability to overcome the possession: Sammy.

Yep, way back in Supernatural Season 5, Sam said yes to Lucifer to bring an end to the apocalypse. The plan was to take control and open the door to the cage. We did have that huge question mark over whether Sam would be able to do it. Nobody had ever shown this ability before.

Well, Sam Winchester did it. Thanks to memories from the Impala, Sam stepped forward and went through with the whole plan. Who didn’t cheer out for his ability even if it meant going to the cage?

6. Helping people who have wronged him

When it comes to being wronged and attacked, it’s hard to help them at a later date. If you asked anyone else to do it, there’s no way they could. Just look at how some have gone up against those who have wronged them in the past.

Sam Winchester is very different. Even after being tortured, he’s been able to step up and help them.

This was something he did last season when it came to Gabriel. Despite the events of “Mystery Spot,” Sam was full of empathy (see, linking back to number 8!). He managed to find a way to help Gabriel when Dean didn’t want to at all.

5. Get a normal life (without guilt)

Both brothers have had a chance to live a normal life. Sam was the first one to manage it, getting out of the family business and going through life doing something that he wanted. He spent four years in college and it doesn’t look like he ever felt overly guilty. He was happy.

In Supernatural Season 8, Sam did it again. When Castiel and Dean went missing (they were in Purgatory), Sam managed to get his normal life. I don’t like the storyline, but it shows one thing that Sam can do that others can’t: move on without feeling guilty.

At the time, of course. Later, Sam did feel guilty for letting his brother down. But at the time, he managed to get a normal life without the guilt.

4. Have the most luxurious hair

Okay, this is a semi-joke one but it’s a running gag in Supernatural, right? Could it really be missed off the list? Sam Winchester is the only one with the most luxurious hair.

I need his secret!

What’s more is that he manages to keep his luxurious hair even when he’s in the middle of a demon fight. Even when he’s being tortured, his hair never changes. There has to be a demon deal somewhere in there.

3. Figuring out almost anything

Before Bobby came along at the end of Supernatural Season 1, the Winchesters figured out the majority of cases themselves. Dean initially started it with the help of John’s Journal, but then Sam took over as the research guy.

Between serial killers, mysterious lore, and his knowledge of various languages, he’s been the one to help figure out most of the cases. Even when Bobby did help with the odd one or two cases, Sam was able to think on the spot for other solutions when needed.

The reverse exorcism is just one of these examples. Absolutely nobody else knew if it could work or had even considered it. Sam thought about it and ran with the theory.

2. Being a card shark

While Dean is the pool hustler, Sam is the card shark. He’s a genius at poker and is able to beat anyone, including a witch.

Think back to Supernatural Season 5, when Bobby was so desperate to get his youth back that he bet on poker against a witch. He lost and then it was up to the Winchesters to help. Dean tried, but lost and we got two very grouchy old men.

Sam was the one to get them completely out of the mess they got themselves into. He proved that he’s more than just the lore guy. He’s the card shark.

1. Deal with the memories of Lucifer’s face

In Supernatural Season 13, we got through a beautiful moment of Sam and Rowena connecting (and I could throw in here that only Sam can kill Rowena). There was a bittersweetness to it because it was about their fears of Lucifer. What it led to was the knowledge that Sam had kept this hidden from everyone for years.

Sure, it could just be bad writing but I choose to view it as a sign that Sam is full of strength. After all, we saw him go crazy in Season 7 before the wall in his head broke down thanks to Castiel. We know that he was dealing with some residual effects of the cage. It’s wouldn’t be surprising if there were still some years later.

He managed to push past the memories of Lucifer’s face and that fear to take down the archangel again. While Castiel and Dean ignored his fears, he was able to step up to the plate when necessary.

There are a lot of things about this whole storyline that I don’t like. I hated that Castiel and Dean didn’t even hear Sam out; they didn’t even consider other options to respect Sam’s fears. However, I was super proud of Sammy. He stepped up and hasn’t held a grudge.

Oh, and he also dealt with the torture from two archangels while in the cage. Michael and Lucifer were against him and he came out alright. Nobody else has managed that.
