Lucifer is dead. Nick can’t bear to live without him. What lengths will he go to in order to feel better? Mark Pellegrino gives us a little taste of what’s shortly to come on Supernatural.

Be warned, this post contains a teaser that some would say crosses the line into spoiler. If you don’t want to know, turn away now. Otherwise, let’s talk about what Mark Pellegrino has shared with us on Instagram and what it could mean for the Supernatural story.

When I was younger, I watched soap operas on TV. I learned very early in life that there was a steadfast rule of television: If you don’t see the body, they’re coming back. One thing I’ve learned about Supernatural is that this is only one of the many rules the show bends. Even a body doesn’t seal the deal in this story.

More from Supernatural

We’ve seen Lucifer defeated in many ways- time and again he’s been trapped, tricked, imprisoned and killed — in more than one universe. Most recently, in the Season 13 finale of Supernatural, we saw him really killed.

The story has followed along with this truth, Nick having survived, Jack’s grace gone with his father, and more. But we know Nick has not taken this well. He has prayed and wandered in the hopes of finding and restoring his former occupant.

There have been theories, clues, ideas, and deterrents as to whether or not we will see Lucifer resurface. And we have a couple of issues on the table that could certainly be turned to benefit from his restoration. Nick’s words have so far appeared to fall on emptiness, but now we have a little clue that tells us he may finally have his prayers answered.

So what does it mean?! Well, I think it’s obvious that a few things are definitely true. First, there is going to be a Lucifer situation. Will the archangel, himself, play a role in that? Who knows. Perhaps this is the result of Nick going to extremes to try and bring him back into the picture, but it may be part of that actually happening, as well.

And what about Nick? He is pretty screwed up in this picture. We have seen that before when Lucifer took his body and he was falling apart in “My Heart Will Go On,” back in Season 6. But we were led to believe that wouldn’t be an issue any longer, as his essence was bound to Nick’s body long ago, solving that problem.

Moving on, are we looking at a return, a conclusion, or both? We have no idea if Nick is leaving the story just yet. Given the fact that they are shooting Episode 18 of only 20, we can assume this has the potential for a dangling plotline in the quickly approaching Supernatural season finale.

There is the major, continuous dilemma of Jack and his grace. If Lucifer showed back up, would Jack’s grace be part of his reappearance? That would make another fine situation to end the Supernatural season with, so the door is also open for that.

I honestly still don’t know how that crisis is going to resolve, and we see the corruption and burning of his soul becoming more and more critical by the episode. From my vantage point, I would certainly think that the Supernatural folk are building this up with good reason. It surfaces mildly but persistently and that is pretty much a guaranteed lead-in.

Nick sure has effectively destroyed his possibility of survival on the show without Lucifer. He has killed so many prominent people in that world that everyone is after him. Not even a jail cell will be an option for him now, where the law is concerned. Something very significant will have to happen.

Even Sam Winchester, the more recent bleeding heart hopeful of Supernatural, has turned his back on him now telling him, “You can burn.” Was this one of those little lines from the Supernatural geniuses that was really a covert case of foreshadowing?

From the looks of this photo, Nick seems to have taken it literally. Chuck only knows how this will happen or where it will go, but I’m pretty thrilled to stew in all the possibilities. Kudos on the intriguing “leak,” Mark Pellegrino!
