It’s battle between father and son at the 2017 Emmy Awards as Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia have both been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor for ‘This Is Us.’

More from This Is Us

This is us trying to contain our excitement that the NBC breakout hit has been shown a lot of love by the Emmys! The nominees for the 69th Annual Emmy Awards were announced Thursday and brought a ton of surprises, first time nominees, and —of course — snubs.

NBC’s This Is Us received the top honor nomination at the Emmys, locking in a nod for Outstanding Drama Series. But everyone’s eyes will be trained on one category when the Emmys announce the winners in September, just one week before the Season 2 premiere of This Is Us. No, it’s not the supporting categories for acting, where Ron Cephas Jones and Chrissy Metz have picked up first-time nominations. No, it’s not the guest actor category, where This Is Us boasts three nominations. It’s not even the lead actress category, which criminally and glaringly lacks Mandy Moore’s name. Rather, we’re getting a father vs. son battle in the lead actor race.

For his role as Randall Pearson in This Is Us, Sterling K. Brown earned a nomination for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series. Brown turned in layered performance after layered performance in the first season of This Is Us, making his recognition from the Emmys a no brainer. Alongside his television son, Milo Ventimiglia picked up a nomination for his role as Jack Pearson in the same category. It’s Ventimiglia’s first nomination at the Emmys, and after watching all of his sob-worthy monologues, is it any wonder he’s finally being recognized?

It’s also worth noting that Brown and Ventimilgia’s nominations mark the only two acting talents hailing from network shows. That’s right, This Is Us boasts a ton of bragging rights this year. The five remaining nominees each star in series on cable, premium, or streaming channels: Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), and Anthony Hopkins (Westworld). Leave it to those Pearson boys to stick together and show the academy the fiercest race they have seen in years!

Brown and Ventimiglia shared an emotional father and son moment in “The Trip,” and now they’re sharing the ultimate father vs. son fight. But of course, Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia won’t exert any competitiveness leading up to the big show. A nomination for one cast member is a nomination for the whole cast, but two — especially in the same category — is just icing on the cake. Both actors deserve the recognition for their stunning work in the series, and we’re certain they will make the sweetest lemonade at this year’s Emmys.

This Is Us returns for Season 2 on Tuesday, September 26 at 9/8c on NBC. The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards air Sunday, September 17 at 8/7c on CBS.
