The cast and creator of ‘This Is Us’ gathered to talk Season 2 at NBC’s press tour, and critics caught the first cry-worthy clip.

More from This Is Us

There’s good news and bad news. The good news is that the first clip from the second season of This Is Us has been released. The bad news is that it hasn’t been released to the public. But before we take to the streets with our tissue boxes and beach towels and demand to cry over the first footage, we’ve got the next best thing. And it’s sure to gear up your tear ducts all the same.

While promoting Season 2 of NBC’s crown jewel drama This Is Us, the cast and creator gathered at the Television Critics Association summer press tour to talk about the landmark series and drop hints about the upcoming season. Apart from praising the show’s reach for both ratings and representation, as well as announcing an A-list guest star, the team fronting broadcast’s hottest show brought an exclusive gift for those in attendance. Unfortunately, the clip of Randall and Rebecca’s heart-to-heart hasn’t yet been disseminated for fandom consumption, meaning we’re left champing at the bit and clinging to every transcribed word. But before we tack it onto the long list of things we have to look forward to, let’s breakdown Randall’s question for Rebecca.

As you’ll remember, Randall ended Season 1 wanting to adopt a baby, bringing back around to the beginning. His full circle epiphany throws Beth through a loop, which has us worrying about the fate of their relationship in Season 2. However, it appears the Pearsons are seriously considering adopting a child, as the clip previewed at the TCAs involves Randall asking his mother what motivated she and Jack’s decision to adopt him.

Here’s what Rebecca tells Randall, according to Deadline:

"“I said ‘No’, but your father was so sure. I was tired and grieving and he just kept pushing me. He was so determined you were meant to be… Sometimes in a marriage, someone has to  push to make the big moves, and often it was your father. Our marriage wasn’t perfect, but none are, and your father wasn’t perfect either, but he was pretty damn close, as close as they come. He pushed this stranger on me, and that stranger became my son, and that stranger became life, he became you.”"

Yeah… The Pearsons are coming back to television guns blazing, and no one’s feels are safe. In the clip, Randall talks to modern-day Rebecca, though the scene meanders into a flashback of that fateful day in the hospital. Perhaps its the scene Dan Fogelman teased last month, in which Jack and Rebecca peer into the newborn ward. Still, those chills do not lie, and we’re confident that Season 2 will score Mandy Moore a much-deserved Emmy nomination.

Although we can’t see the first clip from Season 2 just yet, it does provide an inside look as to what’s next for Randall. As adoption because something he and Beth — well, at least he — is seriously considering, he’s turning to Rebecca, who he had been estranged with during Season 1 because of adoption drama. Looks like the Pearsons have healed, and we’ll be reaping all of the bittersweet, tear-jerking benefits.
