Sterling K. Brown and Randall Pearson are basically the same person, as the Emmy winner opens up about the hobby they have in common.

More from This Is Us

As if the parallels between Sterling K. Brown and his on-screen persona on This Is Us weren’t already spot on enough, Brown just added another layer of similarity. From Sterling and Randall both being awesome fathers to their shared sincere personalities, they are basically the same person. Well, Brown’s latest interview with Runner’s World all but confirms it.

We all know that Randall Pearson enjoys a morning run — with or without friendly-ish competition from Kevin. As it turns out, art once again imitates life as Sterling K. Brown picked up running at 21 years old and never looked back. Brown tells Runner’s World that while he was a student at Stanford University, he went on a run for his milestone birthday: “I woke up on my birthday and said, ‘I want to run 10 miles.’ I just wanted to see if I could run double-digit mileage.” Most people want to have a beer or eat double-digit cakes at 21, but Brown ran 10 miles. It’s entirely plausible that Randall would have celebrated the same way. Legends.

However, Brown’s birthday run wasn’t a one-off deal. He kept up the tradition every year until he turned 30, when he amended the length of his run. With a hectic schedule shooting This Is Us and various films, Brown aims for four mile runs as to maximize his time at home with his wife and kids. He tells the magazine, “If I get in four miles four to five times a week, I’m happy.”

In his own words, the Emmy winner expresses his passion and “psychological zeal” for running, which has become his barometer for feeling healthy, a confidence booster, and a bonding experience with his 6-year-old son. But Sterling K. Brown isn’t just racing his protege. On the set of This Is Us during running scenes with Justin Hartley, that playful sibling rivalry runs over into to real life:

"“When [This Is Us co-star Justin Hartley] and I are shooting scenes where we go running together, they’ll call, ‘Cut!’ But we’ll still be running off camera right next to each other. I’m not sure who would win in a race. He’s got some long legs but I feel like I’ve got a slightly quicker turnover. It’s really tit for tat. It’s like the perfect competition between brothers.”"

Honestly, we wouldn’t mind catching a race between the Pearson brothers!
