Supernatural Season 13, Episode 18 picked up right where the last episode left off but continued the season of returning faces with an epic Apocalypse World return.

When Supernatural hinted that Season 13 would see some previously dead characters return, there were a handful at the top of our list that needed to come back. Two of them did very early on…well, one did because the other had already appeared in the Supernatural Season 12 finale. But there was one missing.

Since the return of Apocalypse Kevin, the show kept bringing back characters we weren’t overly bothered about (like Zachariah for a whole 30 minutes!). Sure, there were some surprise returns (Gabriel) and disappointing returns (Missouri) but there was one missing. Now that has been rectified.

More from Supernatural

A word of warning: There are spoilers in this post for Supernatural Season 13, Episode 18.

I’ll do this in three parts, since it was evenly spread out between the Apocalypse World and the Bunker and Heaven’s storyline.

“Bring ’em Back Alive” saw Dean and Ketch head into the Apocalypse World in search for Mary and Jack. Unfortunately, they didn’t come across them, but they did come across someone who could help. The downside was this someone was a prisoner of war and would be executed if Dean and Ketch didn’t save them in time.

Meanwhile, Sam and Cass helped Gabriel in the bunker. That meant protecting him from Asmodeus, who quickly came calling to the bunker for his prized possession. We did learn what the Enochian symbols were for and who attacked the bunker by the end, though.

While all that was going on, Lucifer and Anael had some words about Lucifer’s position in Heaven. Guess what: he’s lied about everything and this is the best storyline to start with.

The angels aren’t happy with Lucifer’s leadership. He wants respect without putting the effort in to gain it; wanting to be God without acting like God. Anael calls him out on it, so he decides to dress the part–ie. dress like the Men in Black. Then he sits on his Godly throne and listens to prayers. Not many interest him, except a couple of priests attempting to exorcise a demon they believe in Satan.

When he sees the priests, he knows the demon and sends that demon away. He tries to talk to the priests but they don’t listen and with a click of his fingers they’re gone.

Honestly, Lucifer doesn’t actually want to be God. He’s not interested in the whining and the moaning, not seeing the irony that he’s a whiny, moaning brat right now. Again, Anael calls him out on it and this time he grabs her by the neck and threatens to kill her. Oh, and admits that he can’t make new angels and can’t give the angels their wings back. He’s lied about it all and Anael isn’t happy (I don’t blame her!)

Sam and Castiel try to help Gabriel

Meanwhile in the bunker, Castiel is back and learns all about Dean’s decision to go to the Apocalypse World alone. Sure, he’s not happy but he and Sam do have a bigger issue to deal with: Gabriel.

When they try to give Gabriel his grace back, Gabriel instantly fights back. This poor traumatized archangel won’t say a word and acts like he doesn’t remember any of them. However, when they leave him alone, he does write the story of his death in Enochian all over the walls.

It turns out that Gabriel’s double that was killed was just another double. With everyone believing he was dead, he went into hiding in Monte Carlo with some porn stars and that’s where he stayed until he was kidnapped and found himself in Asmodeus’ dungeon. Demigods sold him out to the weakest of the four Princes of Hell. Since then, he’d been Asmodeus’ prisoner, who had been using Gabriel’s grace to get stronger.

Of course, Asmodeus knows exactly where Gabriel is, so gives Sam a call. Sam has 10 minutes to hand Gabriel back over or he’ll level the bunker. And yes, Asmodeus can (and does) get in. Just as it looks like Asmodeus is going to take Gabriel back, Gabriel gets the courage and strength to fight back.

As Gabriel’s grace heals his wounds, his wings also show up against the wall of the bunker. Yes, he somehow still has his wings! And with a flash of the hands, Gabriel burns Asmodeus on the spot. Is that really the end for Jeffrey Vincent Parise?

Sam and Cass explain the whole Apocalypse World situation, but Gabriel decides he’s not getting in the middle of it. Putting his money on the Winchesters saving the world, Gabriel flies out. So much for an archangel on their side!

A surprise return in the Apocalypse World of Supernatural

In the Apocalypse World, Dean and Ketch go in search for Mary and Jack. While on the journey to find Michael, they come across a group of angels with a prisoner. The hood is taken off the prisoner to reveal…

CHARLIE!!!!!!!

The surprise return is, in fact, Charlie. The one character I’ve been waiting for since the announcement previously dead characters would return. Cue a lot of cheering on Twitter (and the hope that this isn’t bringing her back to kill her again). Can Supernatural really do something like that?

Well, for now, Dean and Ketch need to save Charlie. As they follow the angels, Dean is attacked and shot by a hunter. Ketch does save the day and they go back on their way, only to find out that Dean was shot with poison. Luckily, Ketch knows the poison as a Men of Letters one, so can create the antidote. It’s a good job Dean agreed that Ketch could tag along.

Back on the trail, Dean finally opens up about why Charlie is so important. That leads to a sob story from Ketch and it looks like the two could have been good friends if it wasn’t for the whole thing of the British Men of Letters trying to kill the American Hunters thing of last season.

Anyway, the two get to the prisoner of war camp, where Apocalypse Charlie is being held and tortured to answer questions. When she won’t answer, she’s sentenced to death. Of course, just as the executioner is about to kill her, Dean and Ketch storm the prisoner of war camp and save her.

Woohoo! Charlie is alive and she now gets to meet Dean–remember this Charlie has never met Dean Winchester, making this whole thing even more heartbreaking.

With time running out, Ketch tells Dean to go back. He’ll stay in the Apocalypse World (with Charlie, who refuses to leave her world until Michael is gone at least) and find Mary and Jack now they’re not with Michael. Dean does that with just seconds before the rift closes, only to find out everything that’s happened in the bunker.

To say he’s not happy that Gabriel is gone and there’s no archangel grace anymore is an understatement. He throws a tantrum but stops himself from blaming Sam and Cass (since he knows it’s not their fault). But every time they get close, something goes royally wrong. It’s the same old, same old on Supernatural.

With just five episodes left of the season, things are heating up. The Winchesters need to get their hands on the archangel grace again and hope they can find Ketch, who has hopefully found Mary and Jack. But at least it looks like one bad guy has gone!
