Hellatus is dragging. Now that SDCC is out of the way, it’s full steam ahead on the premiere date in October. That means looking for something else to watch. How about Wynonna Earp?

The summer Hellatus is the worst. It’s five months of nothing, except glimpses of filming and SDCC. Now that San Diego Comic-Con is done, it’s time to look for ways to entertain ourselves while we wait for October. As much as we’d be happy to watch Supernatural over and over again, at some point we need to consider another show. How about Wynonna Earp?

I wrote a little about the comedy supernatural western in the run-up and during SDCC. It is a show that could be a good alternative, especially since it stars a former SPN guest star, Melanie Scrofano. But she’s not the only reason fans will want to consider watching the show.

This is one of those shows that will appeal to many different people. If you want comedy, you’ve got it. Prefer a bit of a western? That’s there. Need some demon and ghost hunting in your TV shows? Yes, there’s another check in the box.

Let’s break it all down. If you’re not watching Wynonna Earp yet, you should be. Here are five reasons it’s great for the SPN Family.

5. There’s a ghost-killing colt

Let me start with the one thing that drew me in as a Supernatural fan. The colt. It’s not the same colt used in Supernatural, but it is the weapon that Wynonna uses to kill the Revenants–they’re the ghosts of the criminals Wynonna’s great-grandfather, Wyatt Earp, killed. The ghosts are back and they need sending back to their special place in Hell.

The colt is known as the “Peacemaker.” It takes down everything that comes her way, and there are plenty of ghosts, monsters, demons, and everything else Supernatural has to offer.

More from Supernatural

Wynonna isn’t instantly amazing at shooting it. We get to see her learn how to use it and manage it. This is something we’ve seen happen with some of the characters on Supernatural. We’ve watched the likes of Charlie and Kevin get pulled into the hunting world and have to learn as they go. They have to figure out how to handle weapons and deal with the monsters. That’s what you get with Wynonna and her Peacemaker.

There’s the comedy in her learning how to handle her colt. She wants to look cool and impressive, but that’s definitely not what Wynonna is. Granted, she gets better but you’ll love the earlier days, especially if you’re a fan of Charlie.

4. There’s excellent LGBTQ representation

Speaking of Charlie, we’d be amiss if we didn’t include the LGBTQ (and overall diversity) representation in the series. Wynonna’s younger sister, Waverly, has a girlfriend from the very beginning. This isn’t made into a major deal, fitting the relationship in naturally and make it look like it’s normal.

Because it totally is!

There’s no need for a show to make an LGBTQ relationship look surprisingly good or shocking. Fitting it into a storyline naturally is one of the best things to do on TV. We need to prove that this sort of relationship is just the done thing–it’s something I liked hearing from Hale Appleman at The Magicians panel, which you can check out in this roundup of what happened at the panel.

Wynonna Earp isn’t about the romance, though. Sure, it becomes part of the story, but it doesn’t drive every single storyline. It’s just a normal part of life like every relationship should be on any show, really.

When the relationships do become a focal point, it’s totally hot. Think of the Supernatural relationships in the earlier seasons and you’ll get a good idea. And this is relationships of all types because all types need full representation.

3. You’ll get a sense of Sam Winchester

Wynonna Earp does have an element of both Winchester brothers in her. She’s street smart like Dean, but there’s an important element of Sam in her: the reluctance to follow her destiny. Wynonna doesn’t want to be the one to tackle teh Revenants in the world. She’s not interested in this, but she doesn’t have a choice.

Remember way back in Supernatural Season 1 when Sammy joined the hunt with Dean? He didn’t want to be a part of it at first. He initially went to find John and then to get revenge. At no point did he actually want to be a hunter.

Oh, how things have changed. We quickly learned that Sammy had a bigger destiny and now he’s going to be leading hunters to help take down Michael and save Dean at the same time.

Wynonna comes back to her hometown Purgatory but doesn’t want to take up the mantle her great-grandfather has left behind. This isn’t a woman who wants to play nice with others. Like many people with destinies, she doesn’t get a choice.

There’s also a hint of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in there when you think of it that way.

Waverly also has a hint of Sam in her. She’s the book smart kid sister, helping Wynonna tackle the demons, monsters, ghosts, and everything else that comes their way.

2. It’s downright hilarious

Some of the best Supernatural episodes are the comedic ones. Think of the screaming as the cat jumps out of the locker or the “I lost my shoe” moments. When we think of the best moments in the series, we tend to think of the funniest ones.

Wynonna Earp delivers on the comedy. It’s not just about learning how to handle the colt. Each member of the cast has their fun moments. They’re all excellent actors, gelling with each other and clearly having an awesome time behind the cameras.

The dialogue is witty and sharp and the action delivers along with it. Every character has his or her own personality. Each person is uniquely defined. You would be able to just read the lines in the script without names and guess who says each one correctly. Their personalities are crafted fully, in the way that each Winchester brother, Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Meg, Castiel, and many others have been crafted over the years.

And yes, there are plenty of innuendos thrown in. Wynonna Earp is on a par with Supernatural for comedic timing, pop culture, and witty nature.

1. The relationships are well developed

This isn’t just about the romantic relationships. Wynonna Earp prides itself on all relationships being developed. They’re not instantly positive ones, either. We watch them grow and expand over the course of the last two seasons (and now into the third and next year’s fourth).

Let’s just start with Waverly and Wynonna’s sibling bond, which is similar to the Winchester bond we watch Supernatural for. As the older sister, Wynonna doesn’t want her kid sister tagging along. Waverly is carrying the baggage of her big sister leaving her behind. Both have their grievances with each other, but they have to rely on one another. Waverly has her book smarts to help with Wynonna’s street smarts. Without each other, they’d be lost.

Then there’s the way Wynonna and Waverly’s friendships and romantic entanglements have developed. There is instant chemistry between a number of characters, especially Wynonna and Dolls and Waverly and Nicole. You root for these relationships to work out as they go through their highs and their lows.

Wynonna Earp Season 3 is going to sees the Earps’ mom turn up, played by the beautiful and talented Megan Follows. This is going to add a new dynamic. Can they please make Momma Earp a little more focused on her children than Momma Winchester?
