The original animated Titans who won everyone’s hearts is finally returning for a crossover event on Teen Titans GO!

This could be the start of what so many have been praying for. I’m one of the many who grew up with the Cartoon Network animated series Teen Titans, starring Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Cyborg, and I’m also one  of the many demanding them back.

For a while now, there’s been speculation for a possible revival of the series, a sixth season after 12 years off the air. This was teased first in a tweet by Tara Strong, the voice of Raven, and then in the post-credits scene of Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, showing all five original members looking at the audience and Robin stating, “We think we’ve found a way back.”

This seemed like a confirmed return for the Teen Titans, and speculation for a Season 6 grew. Well, as it turned out, the Titans are returning, just not in the way we expected. Though an official revival of their series isn’t off the table, the four original members will appear in a crossover event with their big-headed doubles in Teen Titans GO! to have a face-off.

More from Animated

Loosely based on the comics by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, Teen Titans ran for five seasons on Cartoon Network from 2003 to 2006. It got a line of comic spin-offs, the TV movie Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo, a video game, and is credited as being a major influencer of DC continuity on television. For many, the series is what started early comic book film/series obsession and is the reason that so many 20 to 30-something year-olds love comic book characters so much.

Upon cancellation, fans had hopes that the series might return one day, but those hopes somewhat withered when Teen Titans GO! premiered in 2013. The series proved successful for newer audiences, but the change in look and dumbed down plots didn’t offer much for the original fans, so they remained in their corner of reruns waiting for a proper revival. They’re going to have to keep waiting for that, but this is a good start.

A teaser taken from the upcoming Teen Titans GO! to the Movies DVD release was put online. It doesn’t show much, but it was enough to get rumors going. Warner Bros. confirmed with io9 that the teaser was real and that Teen Titans Go! Vs. Teen Titans will arrive sometime in 2019. However, whether their confrontation will take place in an episode or a movie hasn’t been said.

Is it possible that this crossover is an introduction to a Teen Titans revival? The episode or film could end with their return. The characters appear to be in demand lately, with the Teen Titans Go! to the Movies and the live-action adaptation series Titans, and now this momentary return of the first animation; they’re on a role. If they’re going to bring back the series and give so many ’90s kids what they’ve been praying for, now’s the best time to do it.
