Sam Winchester has had a number of funny, heartbreaking, and beautiful moments. What are his best moments from throughout Supernatural? Here’s a look at the top seven for today’s 25 Days of Sam-mas.

Day 7 of the 25 Days of Sam-mas is a #FlashbackFriday piece, of sorts. It’s a look back at the best Sam Winchester moments throughout the series. And this is most definitely not easy.

Sammy is one of those who’s had a number of great moments. Sometimes, we’ve seen him step up to the challenge of being a leader and other times we’ve cried with him as he’s poured his heart out. Then there have been times we’ve laughed as some of his one-liners and funny moments.

But which ones stand out the most. As it’s Day 7 of Sam-mas, I’ve narrowed it down to these seven best Sam Winchester moments throughout the years.

7. The time he stepped up as leader

In Supernatural Season 12, Sammy made it clear that he wanted to give the British Men of Letters a chance. This was understandable but the best thing was, he agreed to turn against them at the first sign of trouble. And that’s exactly what he did.

When it came to it, Dean wasn’t able to fight against the British Men of Letters. Instead, Sam had to step up as the leader and he immediately shared his concerns. Backed by Dean and Jody, Sam led a ragtag band of hunters against the British Men of Letters. We finally got the moment we’d waited 12 seasons for.

This was a setup for the leader that Sam has become in this season.

6. When he overpowers Lucifer

At the end of Supernatural Season 5, it was clear the only way to get rid of Lucifer was to say yes. It seemed a little backward and it wasn’t clear if Sam could pull it off, but he was willing to try. More importantly, he was willing to sacrifice everything to save the world.

And so, we got the epic showdown of “Swan Song.” This was a chance for Lucifer and Michael to go up against each other, but in the end, Sammy pulled it off.

With the help of the memories in the Impala, Sam was able to overpower Lucifer, throw down the key to Lucifer’s cage, and throw himself and Lucifer into it. Oh, and he dragged Michael (unfortunately, inside Adam) into the cage with him for good measure.

5. His extremely bad acting

When the Winchesters found themselves in the “real” world, Sam and Dean had to act. Who doesn’t love that moment when Sam tries to act as himself. It’s hilariously awkward.

No matter what I’m doing, if someone mentions a “key,” I can’t help but think of “The French Mistake.” After all, if there is a key, there must be a lock.

Throughout the episode, Sam tried his hardest to be the person in this other world. Maybe he tried a little too hard.

4. When Sam tried to deal for Dean

Early in the series, we got some of the best Sammy moments. In the fourth season, we got one of the times that Sam did everything he could to get his brother back. We had a flashback of Sam attempt to make a deal with a crossroad demon to save his brother from Hell.

After all, it was the least Sam could do. Dean had made a deal for Sam in the first place.

It wasn’t going to happen. What we got was Sam crashing and burning, as he realized that he was alone in the world.

3. When he tried everything to save Dean

There are two moments that stand out but they both show the same thing. Sam is nothing but persistent when it comes to Dean potentially dying. The first time we see it is all the way back in the first season, when Dean is electrocuted and on Death’s Door. “Faith” sees Sam head out for a faith healer because it’s all he can do.

The second time is in the third season. Sam is willing to make his brother a monster just to stop him from going to hell. We see his desperation and his inability to see right from wrong when it comes to his love for Dean.

It’s heartbreaking to watch him go through these shifts in personality, but it’s necessary. And we see the type of loving brother he is.

2. That time with the reverse exorcism

There’s no way that I couldn’t mention the reverse exorcism. This is the best Smart!Sam moment of Supernatural and is also one of his top moments ever.

The event was actually something Sam just hoped would work. It’s not the first time he’s put his theories to the test. Remember the racist truck?

Well, this time, he decides to say an exorcism in reverse in the hope that it will put the demon smoke back into the victim. After all, the Winchesters need answers and this is the best way of getting those answers.

1. The time Sam confessed his failures

When I think of top Sam moments, there’s always one that comes to mind. In the Supernatural Season 8 finale, Sam takes the final step to close the Gates of Hell. However, Dean wants to stop him, knowing that it will mean the death of his brother.

In that moment, Sam shares his confession with Dean. It had been a rough year and Sam’s confession was that he’d failed his brother. He was sorry for that, guilty that he’d let his brother remain in Purgatory for a year while he lived a normal life.

Yes, we all disliked that storyline but if it wasn’t for that, we wouldn’t have had this emotional confession. There is no way this moment in “Sacrifice” would have meant as much as it does now.
