May 2 marks a special day on Supernatural. It’s Sam Winchester’s birthday. With the final season just around the corner, it’s time to make a wishlist. Here are five things we need to see from Sam Winchester in Supernatural Season 15.

It’s Sam Winchester’s birthday today. May 2, 1983, saw the start of his story, one that would be filled with pain and loss, unfortunately. However, he’s certainly found family and during Episode 300, we got to see that he’d accepted his life as the way it is. Now Supernatural Season 15 is just around the corner and we know there’s still more development necessary.

To celebrate Sam’s birthday this year, I want to look at the development that’s needed for the final season. What do we need to see from the younger Winchester brother? Here are five things I’d love to see.

5. Continued development as a leader

The 14th season premiere delivered us a forceful and confidence Sam Winchester. We got to see him as the leader we’ve always known he could be. And while Dean supported him as a leader at first, the storylines weren’t there to really continue it.

I’d like to see more of Sam leading the group of people. In a way, I’d have loved to see Sam be the one to give Mary’s eulogy, as the one who spent months with her and the other hunters while searching for Dean when he was possessed by Michael. But just more of Sam stepping up and taking on the plan creation and being the one the hunters look up to will be enough for me.

4. More willingness to stand up to Dean

While I fully accept that Dean was right in putting Jack in the box, there was something about the episode that irritated me. And I’ve come to the conclusion that it was Sam’s lack of willingness to stand up to Dean. While he’s certainly argued with his brother, he doesn’t necessarily stop Dean from doing some of the most questionable things.

More from Supernatural

I’d have loved to have seen Sam say “okay, I’ll tell Jack that we’ll keep looking for a way to help him, but it won’t be a lie. I will keep looking for a way to restore his soul.” That would have been more like the Sam Winchester we’ve come to know.

Part of me is convinced Sam’s out-of-character moment was due to grief. I can accept that. However, I’d like to see more honesty and more willingness to stand up to Dean with consistency in Supernatural Season 15.

3. More bonding time with Castiel

While Castiel and Dean shared the bond at first, the bond with Sam has grown over time. With Michael in control of Dean, Supernatural Season 14 gave Castiel and Sam a chance to develop a deeper bond. This was a chance to see their friendship at a different level.

They both have Dean at heart every single time. They also want the best for the world. Yet, there are many other ways that they could be friends. If they were both human and didn’t both hunt, they could be the best of friends because of their shared interests – and their smarts.

“Peace of Mind” was an excellent way to show how their bond had grown. We need more of that in the final season.

2. A chance to feel like he’s needed

During Episode 300, he accepted that the hunting life was right for him. He was doing good things and saving people. But by the end of Supernatural Season 14, he was clearly starting to doubt things. After all, people around him were still dying.

What I’d love for Sam to realize is that hunting has been worth it and that he’s been a necessary part of it. He’s made some major sacrifices over the years, but it’s Dean that tends to get more of the credit. It’s Dean who is the consistent focus for show mythology.

We need to see Sam step into the focus more. Don’t just be the one that needs saving but be the one that is the main player every now and then. Now that it’s all about the final big bad – someone who is supposedly a fan of both Winchester brothers – there’s a chance we can see Sam Winchester feel like he’s actually needed and not the sidekick.

1. The opportunity to find happiness

I’ll end with something I’m sure we all want for both brothers. It’s time for them to find true happiness – and not the happiness they think they’ve found. While Sam was clearly accepting that the hunter life is the best one for him, he’s not been able to find true happiness at all.

His life is full of loss and heartache. Maggie and the other Apocalypse World hunters were killed, he’s lost his mom again, and now he’s lost Jack. Season 14 sucked!

I’d love for the final season to show him real happiness. The only way I can see that happening is if the gates to Heaven and Hell were killed and all monsters stopped from roaming the world. And maybe stop killing the women he’s been with?
