Thursday TV ratings: Station 19 and A.P. Bio tick up [May 2]
Almost all shows saw upward ticks in the Thursday TV ratings. What does this mean for shows like Station 19, A.P. Bio, and S.W.A.T, which are still on the bubble? Here’s a look at the May 2 ratings details.
Thursday TV ratings are in and they’re looking good. Almost every show saw an upward tick in both metrics. A couple saw upward ticks in the demo or the total audience and two saw downward ticks in both metrics. What do the May 2 ratings mean for the shows still on the bubble, including Station 19, S.W.A.T., and A.P. Bio?
I’ll quickly get a few comments about shows that have already been renewed or are ending after this season. The Big Bang Theory won the night with its 12 million viewers and 1.8 in the demo. That’s not all that surprising. Young Sheldon was in second place, with 10.53 million viewers (steady from the previous new episode) and 1.4 in the demo (joint with Grey’s Anatomy and down 2% from the previous new episode).

Meanwhile, The CW was the only network to see a decrease in both metrics. In the Dark saw the biggest loss, losing 47% of its demo and 31% of its audience. This could be because Supernatural no longer airs before it or it may have just been a bad night for the network. It doesn’t matter because the show is already renewed for a second season.
iZombie Season 5 premiered in the 8 p.m. slot for The CW. While it was down 37% in the demo and 23% in the audience from the Season 4 premiere, there’s excellent news compared to the Season 4 finale. The demo remained the same and the total audience was actually up by just short of 2%. The show is ending after this season, so the ratings don’t really matter but as fans, we’d like to see the show end on a good note, right?
As for shows with a pending status, Thursdays are full of them. FOX didn’t air any of its usual programs, opting for the 2019 Miss USA competition instead. However, the night kicked off with Grey’s Anatomy for ABC with a 10% upward tick in the total audience and 9% boost in the demo. I doubt there’s a risk of this show being canceled unless Ellen Pompeo is walking away – she’s contracted for Season 16.
Station 19 followed on with a 50% uptick in the demo and 31% uptick in the total audience. Some of this will have been due to the crossover with Grey’s Anatomy. Crossovers generally pull in higher ratings because fans of the other shows that don’t necessarily watch usually will tune in to see how storylines introduced will end.
ABC finished the night with For the People, getting a 6% boost in the demo but a 2% drop in the total audience. Despite the show being one of the lowest rated on ABC, its viewership has increased this season. I think it may survive a third season and keep its TGIT slot midseason.
A.P. Bio Saw a good 21% boost in the demo and 13% boost in the total audience for NBC at 8:30 p.m. Right now, I’m not sure it’s enough to save the show. It remains in 17th out of 20 shows. So far, nothing has been canceled from NBC’s lineup except Midnight, Texas and I have a feeling a couple of comedies will be going.
Speaking of NBC comedies, Abby’s remains in trouble despite its 14% uptick int eh demo and 1.5% uptick in the audience. The show remains the lowest-rated uncanceled show on the network.
Finally, it’s over to CBS, which has two shows still on the bubble. Life in Pieces saw a 6% increase in the demo and remained steady in the total audience. While the figures don’t seem initially great compared to the likes of The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, the show remains in 9th place out of 26. I think we’ll see another season.
S.W.A.T. is one of the shows I’m most worried about in the Thursday night slot, especially from May 2. The Thursday TV ratings haven’t been great for the reboot, although it did get a 1.5% boost in both metrics last night. Like SEAL Team, despite it’s real and awareness raising storylines, the show is in the bottom half of CBS shows.
