Tuesday TV ratings: Crisis down, The Resident up
Jan. 14 saw new episodes of almost everything. Here’s a look at how the TV ratings fared, with Crisis returning down and The Resident up.
Almost everything was new on Jan. 14. The only network to hold a special was ABC at 8 p.m., bringing more of the Jeopardy! specials that have performed well. The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths returned with the final two parts, CBS held its TV crime drama night, and NBC’s programming returned. Here’s a look at the TV ratings for the night.
We’ll start with ABC’s continued success with Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time. Once again, the special pulled in the highest demo and total audience of the night. While slightly down from some of the episodes last week, it’s still a sign that fans love Alex Trebek and ABC has made a good choice for viewers and advertisers.
Sadly, the ratings didn’t stick around for other shows. Last Tuesday, mixed-ish got an excellent boost from the special, but the same couldn’t be said this week. Both it and black-ish dropped by a large percentage, with black-ish continuing in the firing line.
More from Ratings
- Thursday TV ratings: Grey’s Anatomy up, Walker Independence down
- Wednesday TV ratings: One Chicago mixed, Kung Fu down (November 9)
- Tuesday TV ratings: The Resident and Monarch down (November 8)
- Monday TV ratings: All American down, Quantum Leap up (Nov. 7)
- Weekend live TV ratings: Fire Country and FBI mixed
Emergence also struggled this week, dropping below The CW in the demo. Granted, it was the Crisis special, but the 0.3 demo (40% down from the previous episode) is still extremely low for ABC. I don’t think the mystery drama is getting renewed for a second season.
NBC had mixed results with the return of This Is Us and New Amsterdam. While the demo was the highest for the timeslot, This Is Us‘ episode, which saw Sophia Bush guest star, dropped 7%. New Amsterdam‘s demo remained steady, but the audience was down by 9%. There’s nothing to worry about, though. This Is Us has two more seasons to go and New Amsterdam was recently renewed for three seasons.
FOX also had a mixed night. The Resident was up by 4% in the total audience and steady in the demo. 24 Hours to Hell and Back did see slips, though. It’s concerning for the Gordon Ramsey series. What’s going to be interesting is whether FOX will concede that Tuesdays are bad nights and low ratings are going to be the norm.
Why are Tuesdays bad nights? You can look at CBS for that. NCIS continued to be the highest-viewed scripted series, with 10 million people tuning in. It was down by 3%, though. FBI and FBI: Most Wanted were also down in the total audience, with FBI down in the demo and the spin-off steady.
I doubt there’s anything to be concerned about just yet. FBI remains one of CBS’ best dramas. The fact that FBI: Most Wanted‘s demo held steady for its second episode and only lost less than 10% of the audience is a good sign. There’s still time to stabilize.
Finally, we’re looking at The CW. While Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow were technically up from previous episodes (and the last season premiere for Legends), the figures are down from the previous episodes of Crisis on Infinite Earths. This isn’t all that surprising considering the break. The CW will have lost the momentum with the episodes, and it would have been better to run them straight after the previous three. However, the ratings are nothing to grumble about for the network.
There’s nothing to worry about for The CW shows. All except those already ending have been renewed, with Katy Keene landing an extra 13 episodes.
