Chrissy Metz one-ups Jimmy Fallon’s Michael McDonald impression and teases Season 2

Watch out, Jimmy Fallon! You’ve got some competition when it comes to musical impressions. This Is Us standout and recent Emmy nominee Chrissy Metz appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Monday night and brought a few surprises. First of all, we never anticipated that anyone could best Jimmy Fallon’s Michael McDonald impression, but Chrissy Metz isn’t to be underestimated!

Before breaking out the big guns and teasing what’s to come for Kate in Season 2 of This Is Us, Metz recalled the fateful day that she landed the role on the unprecedented smash-hit series. When she tested for the role of Kate against another actress, Metz had mere cents in her bank account. “I heard this story that you only had, like, 82 cents–” Fallon started before Metz cut in. “One! Eighty-one cents,” she corrected. “Don’t give me that extra penny, Fallon!” Thankfully, she had plenty of gas in her car to make it to the audition and enough spotty cell reception to hear the glorious phone call from creator Dan Fogelman that she got the job. Fallon also pressed for spoilers from This Is Us’ upcoming second season, but Metz remained tight lipped. Looks like we’ll have to keep waiting for those sought-after spoilers fans have been ravenous for since the Season 1 finale. However, Metz did reveal that Kate will be entering the other family business in Season 2 as she pursues her passion for singing.

“Kate and Toby move in together, you see that in the finale, and she picks up the beautiful picture of Mandy Moore, who plays Rebecca, my mom, and she’s like, ‘I wanna sing,'” Metz said. “So, she’s following a bit in her mom’s footsteps.”

Metz herself admitted to being something of a songstress, saying that she prefers to sing rather than talk. No complaints here! She’s the friend who makes connections to lyrics and picks up a conversation in song, like an instant jukebox. But what she calls “obnoxious,” we call amazing, especially given her next-level Michael McDonald impression. Check it out below!
