The Penguin release updates, cast, plot details, trailer and more

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has spawned its own universe. The first spin-off of the fan favorite caped crusader film is set to make its HBO Max debut in the near future. We’re speaking of The Penguin, a series set one week after the movie’s events that follows Oswald Cobblepot’s grab for power when the criminal underbelly of Gotham is in need of a new kingpin.

In the film, Oswald was a procurer. He worked behind the scenes and didn’t have his own operation in the way one needs in order to be the #1 baddie in a city full of them. The Max original will take viewers on his journey to becoming the villain comics fans know him to be.

The Pegnuin plot details

Despite the plot being kept under wraps for the most part, if you’ve seen The Batman, you know where the story is going to go. Dylan Clark, a producer on the series, described it as being akin to Scarface. As in, we’re in for a gangster origin story for Penguin.

That makes sense given the film’s ending. Below, we’ll share some major spoilers from The Batman, so we suggest coming back later to finish this article if you haven’t seen the movie yet.

Spoilers ahead of The Batman

The last shot of Penguin in the film consists of him looking over a Gotham dealing with the aftermath of a major catastrophe. The Riddler’s game culminated in a devastating loss for the citizens of the city, one that will make the wealth gap between them even more disparate.

A power vacuum has also opened up in the wake of a kingpin’s death. As such the criminals in town will by vying for the top spot and among them will no doubt be Penguin. Though he’s an underling in The Batman, he ran his boss’ entire operation.

The Iceberg Lounge, its secret club 44 Below, the Drops empire that’s been built, even down to security and entourage had all been handled by Penguin. He fashioned himself as a procurer, a supplier who asked no questions. Now, however, there’s room for him to take over, and that’s exactly what he plans to do in the spin-off series.

If this is really going to be a show focused on a gangster, then we expect the series to get the go ahead for a TV-MA rating to accommodate the violence, gore, drug use, profanity, and adult content the genre is known for.
