Bridgerton prequel: All the details to know about Queen Charlotte’s spin-off

Netflix‘s Regency-era series Bridgerton has swept us off our feet since the first season dropped in Dec. 2020. We were first introduced to the beautiful Daphne Bridgerton and her roguish beau Simon Bassett. Then the second season focused on the love story of bull-headed Anthony Bridgerton and his equally stubborn lady love Kate Sharma. Now a Bridgerton prequel will be bringing us the backstory of Queen Charlotte!

I don’t think any fan will tell you that they don’t want more Bridgerton content they can get their hands on. And thankfully, Netflix feels the same. The streaming service and Shondaland are teaming up once again. Shonda Rhimes will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer of the new show.

Though her character isn’t in the Bridgerton books and was specifically created for the popular Netflix series, the monarch has become a definite fan-favorite. Here’s what we know ahead of the release of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story!

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story release date and filming

Great news! The Bridgerton prequel is set to release Thursday, May 4, 2023 on Netflix. There will be a total of six episodes in the limited series.

We’ve known a spin-off was in the works since Netflix announced the news in May 2021. But according to an Instagram post from director Tom Verica, filming didn’t begin until March 28, 2022. Verica also shared a photo of a script titled “Queen to Be.” There’s a very good chance that’s the name of the first episode where we’ll find out how a young Charlotte finds herself in the palace life.

What is Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story about?

According to a press release from Netflix, the drama will center around the rise to power and love life of a young Queen Charlotte, including her marriage to King George and how their great love story lead to a societal shift. We’ll also see the younger years of Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the Bridgerton house, as well as the strong and sophisticated Lady Danbury.

The prequel will establish a young Lady Danbury as a guiding light for the new queen while she herself grows into the powerful woman we know, per Netflix. In Bridgerton season 2, we saw how she strategically crafted a solution that helped the queen, the Sharmas, and the Bridgertons. Lady Danbury actress Adjoa Andoh told TVLine that skill comes up in their younger years as well.

The news outlet also shared that the three ladies are actually closer friends than we thought. Queen Charlotte actress Golda Rosheuvel references the scene where King Edward comes in and Edwina is able to calm him down. She said Lady Violet and Lady Danbury are her best friends and they are already aware of the king’s deteriorating mental health.

She told TVLine:

"In the first take, I just focused on my best mates. The King comes in, and that emotion hits me. I know that they’ve seen him behave like this before, and I know that they know what’s going on because I’ve told them. They’re my mates. They are like family."

I’m so interested to see the backstory between this trio and how the three of them became and remained friends!

Netflix’s Tudum website shared the full list of actors for the Queen Charlotte spin-off. A young queen, Lady Danbury, and Lady Violet have been cast! The actors who currently portray these characters – Golda Rosheuval, Adjoa Andoh, and Ruth Gemmell – will reprise their roles in the prequel.
