Barbie was snubbed a BAFTA 2024 Best Film nomination

Though the movie received five nominations overall, Best Film was not one of them.

Alright all you Barbies and Kens, gather around. I'm ready to battle it out with someone. Ok, not really. We're all friends and civilized people here. Though I have to say there's true disappointment in the lack of attention the wonderful Barbie movie is getting during this awards season. The film hasn't been able to take home any wins in the major categories at the Golden Globes 2024 and Critics Choice Awards 2024. And now, BAFTA 2024 has snubbed the fantasy comedy. In more than one way!

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations came out on Jan. 18, and Barbie is noticeably absent from the Best Film category. Those currently up for a potential win are Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Poor Things. Of course I'm not saying that these movies don't deserve to be recognized as well. But, Barbie really should be on the list.

The BAFTAs also have an Outstanding British Film category. It is an awards show focused on highlighting the best Brit projects after all. And Poor Things starring Emma Stone is nominated once again in that category. I don't have anything against the film. But, the awards show could have given Barbie a slot in Best Film since Poor Things qualifies for the Outstanding British Film category.

Honestly, this awards season has snubbed our favorite movie so far, and I'm not happy about it. Of course it doesn't have to be the only film winning all the awards. However, the Margot Robbie-led film, which is currently streaming on Max, is truly not being recognized the way it deserves. The story addresses so many important topics - learning to love yourself just the way you are, societal issues when it comes to gender roles, understand who you are, and so much more.

Plus through it all, the film makes us laugh and tackles these issues in a smart and mostly lighthearted way. It has the perfect balance between getting the messages out there, and still making it an enjoyable watch. It's a true shame that it hasn't even been nominated for Best Film at this year's BAFTAs.

So what nominations did the comedy get? The production garnered a total of five, but not Greta Gerwig for Best Director. Another snub in my opinion. The categories Barbie is nominated for are:

  • Leading Actress - Margot Robbie
  • Supporting Actor - Ryan Gosling
  • Original Screenplay - Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach
  • Production Design - Sarah Greenwood, Katie Spencer
  • Costume Design - Jacqueline Durran

At least Robbie is in the running for a possible Leading Actress win! I really hope she takes home the award in that category, as well as Gosling and Original Screenplay. Becaue truly, there is no film like this one when it comes to the story. It's unique and fun, and deserves all the awards! The other actresses are Emma Stone from Poor Things, Fantasia Barrino from The Color Purple, Sandra Hüller from Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan from Maestro, and Vivian Oparah from Rye Lane.

The BAFTA 2024 air live on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024 on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK and BritBox in the United States. For a full list of nominees, head over to the award show's website.
